Teacher Helps

AHHHHHHHHH! It's Saturday night and a teacher just called in sick!

Ever had this happen? Okay, how 'bout repeatedly? Reality is it happens to all of us. What can you do? The bottom line is that we as Children's Pastors deal mostly with volunteers. The only leverage we have is frankly their service to God and their integrity.  We are at the mercy of those elements.   Quite honestly they can decide to hang it up at any time! People are just maxed out these days. They may forget they are even "on" until late Saturday night. Then you get that phone call as you are dressing to come to church. Or, even the best teacher can't get in becasue of weather, personal reasons or sickness. Come on, be honest, we've all been there too many times! The first thing that we usually consider is to combine age groups for one big class. I personally use that as a last resort. Sure it may be the easiest to implement but it usually isn't the best choice for the kids or the teacher! Come back again to find out why and for some ideas that can help ease your stress!

The Best thing you can do for your class and for yourself is to prepare early in the week! First, read the lesson text on Monday. Familiarize yourself with any support verses and memory verses.  Meditate on the scripture and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you about YOU. What do you need from this lesson? What does God want to speak to you about it personally? Discover any weaknesses or needs you have in relationship to the word. Maybe you have some things you need God's help with before you teach your class. Maybe you need to confess something or need forgiveness in an area of your life. Maybe you learned a  new facet of God's character you never realized was there! This is key before you even think about the kids! Allow God to make it personal to you..alive! When it is alive to you ..in you...then you can passionately relay it to the kids! DONT..DONT...DON'T wait until Saturday night or worse (it happens folks!) Sunday morning!   You cheat yourself out of that intimacy with God in allowing his word to penetrate and work in you first!  You are simply throwing together a lesson to fill the class time..how sad! I guarantee you that soon you will be unhappy, burnt out and ready to step down in a few months or weeks. Remember - Feed yourself the word first, then your words come from your heart and spirit not your head and mouth only!

Now, relate it to the kids!

Once you have allowed God's word to penetrate your heart, now do any ideas come to your mind for the kids? What would God want to say to them? Sure we have a Sunday School Lesson laid out for you...but is there an area he wants you to focus on? Maybe there is an activity or object lesson he has shown you to share that is NOT in the lesson! Once again, you aren't open to that kind of Holy Spirit leading if you have waited until Saturday or Sunday morning.  You are toooooo stressed!  Once you have allowed God to speak to you...read the rest of the Sunday School Lesson we have prepared.  Gather materials and pray for God to make it alive to you and the kids!  When you partner with God each week, you will be refreshed, exhilarated and amazed with what God does in your ministry!
